Stained Glass Work
I began learning how to make stained glass in 2010 with my uncle.
I quickly learned to love the sound the glass cutter makes as it scores the sheet glass, and the way it can snap so cleanly. It can also be a nuisance and not go the way it is intended which results in frustration, and a growing pile of broken glass! |
Stained glass creates beautiful patterns.
It's created by taking sheet glass and cutting it using a glass cutter into a variety of shapes. To create Tiffany style stained glass these pieces are then surrounded with copper tape and soldered together like a jigsaw following the pattern, or cartoon. Alternatively they are joined by surrounding the pieces with lead came which are soldered together. This results in draughty windows! |
I managed to incorporate my love of glass work with my HND course, and spent the final year looking at the way light travels through the glass.
This incorporated my other love, photography. By taking photographs of the coloured 'shadows' caused when light shines through transparent glass and manipulating them I managed to create a variety of interesting images for our final exhibition. |
