| Well October certainly has been busy for me! University has really kicked in - within the first two weeks of starting I have four assignments so panic is beginning to set in! After four years of being distracted from glass, I am now being actively encouraged to think about working with it, and that's actually quite scary! But on a positive glassy note I have taken delivery of a shiny new kiln. This means I shall be able to anneal my handmade beads to make them safe for sale so in the New Year I can start incorporating them into my jewellery. |
It also means I can begin experimenting with fusing glass, this is different to hot lampwork techniques where the glass becomes molten on a flame and is manipulated into shape. It means as a rule working with sheet glass which is cut into shape and when laid on top of each other it is placed into the kiln, heated to not quite a liquid state so that the layers melt together to create a single piece of glass. This can then be reheated over moulds to create bowls, waves or other shapes, or left flat to make coasters or jewellery.
My kiln is quite small so small items will be made in it, hopefully some lovely jewellery items will be produce in the future, but certainly not today!!!

I have also been arranging some Christmas Jewellery parties. December is getting filled with people wanting to organise a girly get together with wine and nibbles, and making themselves some lovely personal jewellery ready for the festive season.

Finally this month I managed to track down some hammers for my hubby! While this shouldn't have been a difficult task as you can buy hammers in most DIY shops, he was specifically after planishing hammers for metal working. As you can see from the images, he has been having some fun in the Dragon Hole making fabulous copper candle holders, even our daughter had a go, and will soon be putting him to shame!
He's created two different sizes and will be available individually or as pairs.
I am hoping to be selling some of these at the Astley school Christmas fair, so if you like them then please come along and support the school, and see what I'll have on my stall.
Please feel free to comment below, or if you have any questions about anything on the site then contact me directly.
See you all next month,
