Well, November passed me by in a blur of lectures driving and lampwork! I can't believe I missed my deadline of posting a message here, but at least I have some great things to share just before Christmas.
One of my uni modules is a technical project, learning the ins and outs of my chosen filed, in this case lampwork. It means I get to play and learn all about the way glass works, and how to make it work for me! As part a second design module I am looking at swirls and curls and all things slightly Art Nouveaux including some beautiful iron work. The challenge is now to transcribe these beautiful shapes into glass, not as easy as I thought.
I have discovered how to twirl the glass around to create wave-like swirls

I have been layering glass, making my own stringer (thin rods of glass) and getting grips with using them by of course making mistakes!
At college I was lucky enough to be involved in a filigree class. Here I learnt how to roll round silver rod into flat rod, shape it, anneal it, pickle it and solder it into a beautiful flower. This piece is about an inch (2.5cm) in diameter and hopefully will be polished and added to a chain in time to be worn over the festive period. |
I also had my first stained glass student in early December. We only had an hour, but I managed to teach her how to safely cut the glass shapes she required for her chosen coaster style, grind the shapes edges to make them safe and fit together perfectly. We managed to get the pieces taped up with copper tape and the time just ran away with us! She's coming back in the new year to solder them together so I will post the results when I can. Click below if you fancy having a go yourself And that's it! Told you I'd been busy! Have a fabulous Christmas and a peaceful New Year. See you in 2016 |
