So it's a New Year, and with loads of newness going on, I thought it was time to be organised and really get into communicating my thoughts, workshop days and helping you guys learn a bit aout me and my work!!! I thought I'd kick off January with a quick chat about this month's birthstone - Garnet - mainly because I found out January the 8th is international Old Rock Day!! A day aimed at getting people interested in geology, how cool is that?! So Garnet, I have discovered is not only the traditional red colour, but comes in a variety of colours, from fiery oranges through red, and into green and even pinks and purples! Who knew? We associate it with red because that's the most common colour we get, even the name derives from the medieval word 'gernet' which meant red. Ancient wearers of garnet believed it was a lucky stone, sometimes called the Gem of Faith as it was thought that those who were good whilst wearing it would be blessed with prosperity and good fortune (and conversely those who were bad whilst wearing it suffered terribly) Healers often used garnet as part of their general kit, placing it directly on wounds to aid the healing process, and warriors were often gifted with it before entering battle for protection. To everyone from ancient Egyptians, through the Romans (who called it granatum meaning seed as it looked like pomegranate seeds), the medieval period and the Victorians, garnet has been regarded as a stone of beauty and prosperity, and is beginning to rise again in popularity despite having fallen out of favour in the 20th century. So, would you like to have something made with garnet? Maybe you've got a birthday coming up this month? Get in touch with me if you'd like an individual piece made just for you using this gorgeous stone. Kat xx |
